April 24th, 2020
Join guide and author, Dr. Sarah Allen and NOAA/Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary educator, Jennifer Stock for a morning exploring pelagic life at Point Reyes. Jutting out nearly 20 miles into the open ocean, the Point Reyes Headlands are an ideal location for spotting migrating pelagic life, including Pacific Gray Whales, Northern Elephant Seals, Pacific Harbor Seals, and thousands of nesting seabirds. At this time of year, gray whale mothers may be seen close to the cliffs as they escort their newborn young from southern California and Mexico back to their feeding grounds in Alaska. On calm days, spouting and breaching whales can be seen. Occasionally offshore, pods of dolphins, porpoises and rarely even Orcas can be seen. We can expect to see Northern Elephant Seals dotting Drakes Beach shorelines as they molt their fur following the birthing season, as well as Harbor Seals that are birthing, and California sea lions as they migrate south to breeding grounds south of Point Reyes. A variety of seabirds including cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots, and Common Murres can be seen nesting on the rocky cliffs, and late migratory birds are also present. If we are lucky we may get a glimpse of a Peregrine Falcon, or a Great-Horned Owl nesting in the cliffs. The area provides views of the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries, where tens of thousands of birds and fish, as well as whales, sharks, seals, and other marine life feed from the cold, nutrient-rich waters.

Get into your Sanctuary Day
Where: Live online event
When: 2 PM-3 PM- PDT

Join our Get into your Sanctuary weekend of events and check out our Watch Party! On Friday July 31st at 10 am, enjoy a presentation about the winged ambassadors of our ocean! Seabirds that live their entire lives at sea (except for one very special time of the year!) have tremendous stories to tell about the health and ecology of the global ocean. What makes a seabird a seabird? What can you do to help seabirds? Learn about the amazing travels of Black-footed and Laysan Albatrosses in the Pacific Ocean and how you can see them in Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is entirely offshore. Within its 1,269 square miles, the sanctuary protects soft seafloor habitat, a rocky bank, deep sea canyons, and communities of wildlife throughout. Its surface waters are feeding areas for local and migratory seabirds and marine mammals.

Join the watch party here: www.facebook.com/NOAAOfficeofNationalMarineSanctuaries

Kid Friendly educational event (pre-recorded talk done with NOAA Live!).
