Ship Strike Panel at the American Cetacean Society-SF Bay Chapter monthly meeting/lecture
Location: Bay Model Visitor Center-2100 Bridgeway Sausalito, CA

Ship strikes of whales have been recognized as a growing concern worldwide. Documented ship strikes from NOAA NMFS data from 1988-2011, occurring just within the GFNMS/CBNMS region, total 20 whales killed by ships (i.e., death caused by vessel collision or carcass exhibited signs of trauma consistent with vessel collision) and an additional 10 injured and possibly killed (i.e., collision observed, but final status unknown). The true number of ship strikes could be at least 10 times higher than the number documented
Catch up and listen to a diverse panel of experts that have been diligently working to identify and implement strategies to reduce the impacts to whales from ships (ship strikes and acoustic disturbance.
Panelists include: Leslie Abramson-Gulf of the Farallones NMS, John Berge: Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Jackie Dragon: Greenpeace, Michael Carver, Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary (CBNMS)
and potentially others.

Annual Field Seminar Boat trip to Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary
6:45am- 5:00pm
Description: Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is an offshore oasis for wildlife. Located 20 miles west off the Marin/Sonoma coast, this rocky bank is a lush feeding ground for fish, invertebrates, seabirds and marine mammals. On these boat trips, you will have the opportunity to:
• Learn how to identify and observe pelagic seabirds and marine mammals
• Find out why and how marine mammals and seabirds come from so far away to feed in this region and what research is revealing
• Learn about what the Sanctuary is doing to learn about and protect this ocean “hotspot”
As we cruise out to the Bank, we may encounter pods of Pacific white-sided dolphins, Dall’s porpoise, seals and numerous seabirds. We’ll enjoy and learn about whatever the ocean offers that day, be it seabirds, marine mammals, blue sharks, jellies, or more!
