Coastal Science Explorations Teacher Workshop with NOAA and Naturebridge
Where:
Marin County Locations
When: June 25th-27th
Three days of outdoor hands-on science learning in Marin County, California. This workshop will be great for your teaching and fun for you! We will explore three beautiful coastal parks – China Camp State Park, Marin Headlands, and Point Reyes National Seashore – to study the San Francisco Estuary and Pacific Ocean. At the end of the workshop, teachers will feel confident in their ability to incorporate citizen science projects into their classrooms and connect their in-class and outdoor learning. Links to the Next Generation Science Standards will be made throughout the course. $125 stipend available on completion.

Description: Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is an offshore oasis for wildlife. Located 20 miles west off the Marin/Sonoma coast, this rocky bank is a lush feeding ground for fish, invertebrates, seabirds and marine mammals. On these boat trips, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn how to identify and observe pelagic seabirds and marine mammals
  • Find out why and how marine mammals and seabirds come from so far away to feed in this region and what research is revealing
  • Learn about oceanographic conditions that very naturally and current trends
  • Learn about what the Sanctuary is doing to learn about and protect this ocean “hotspot”
As we cruise out to the Bank, we may encounter pods of Pacific white-sided dolphins, Dall’s porpoise, seals and numerous seabirds. We’ll enjoy and learn about whatever the ocean offers that day, be it seabirds, marine mammals, blue sharks, jellies, or more!
